Job DescriptionCloning and Expression of Gene Clusters from Environmental Isolates
The laboratory of Professor Mattheos Koffas at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI in Troy, NY) performs fundamental, exploratory and applied research to address some of our planet’s most challenging problems. The Koffas group is developing new knowledge and technologies in metabolic engineering routes to natural products, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. The position available is for cloning and expressing large gene clusters from bacterial isolates in recombinant species such as Escherichia coli. Also, for determining expression levels and further characterization of the gene clusters, the candidate should be able to efficiently run analytical tests including HPLC, Mass Spectrometry and NMR. Additional skills of interest include the ability to use protein chemistry methods (protein purification, homology-based modeling of protein structures, protein electrophoresis etc.), development and use of high-throughput assays to identify the best performers from libraries of gene mutants, the ability to characterize enzyme kinetic and thermodynamic stability as well as activity under various conditions. The successful individual will work as a member of a team of scientists in the Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering constellation that includes Professors Gross and Linhardt in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
Other desirable skills
Experience in supervision of graduate and undergraduate students and ability to perform basic scale up of fermentation process to small fed-batch reactors is desirable. The successful candidate should also enjoy collaborations with scientists and engineers outside of their discipline. To be considered for this position, the candidate must have at least two first authored publications in peer-reviewed journals in the English language where he/she is first author.
• Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. or foreign degree equivalent in Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline prior to the beginning of the appointment.
• Due to the highly collaborative nature of the position, excellent interpersonal and communications skills are an essential characteristic of a successful candidate.
• Strong organizational, problem solving, and time-management skills are essential
The successful candidate will work at RPI’s Center for Biotechnology & Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS, http://biotech.rpi.edu/) that serves as the primary focus of biotechnology research, training, and outreach at Rensselaer. The Center facilitates multidisciplinary research in the basic life sciences, engineering sciences, and technology development and maximizes the impact of Rensselaer’s investment to benefit society.
CBIS supports several state-of-the-art Research Cores (Analytical Biochemistry, BioImaging, Animal Science, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Fermentation, Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Proteomics, Stem Cell Biology). CBIS is one of the most advanced research facilities in the nation.
For an application to be complete, qualified candidates must provide a resume with at least three references and pdf copies of first authored publications. It would also be helpful if the candidate can provide a brief statement of interest.
