Job description
We are seeking a postdoctoral associate to help design, conduct and analyze data from a study of the spatial risk factors for acquisition of arboviruses and the impact of a randomized intervention (Wolbachia introgression into Aedes aegypti). The cluster randomized control trial, being conducted in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, is a collaboration between the Federal University of Minas Gerais, the Emory University Vaccine Trials Evaluation Unit, the University of Florida, and the Yale School of Public Health. The study is funded by the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. The postdoctoral associate will be based at the University of Florida and work under the supervision of both Dr. Derek Cummings, Professor in the Department of Biology and the Emerging Pathogens Institute and at the University of Florida, and Dr. Albert Ko, Department Chair of Epidemiology of Microbial Disease at the Yale School of Public Health. The postdoctoral associate will also work closely with collaborators in Brazil, including Dr. Mauro Teixeira at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. The successful candidate will lead the design, conduct and analysis of a time-use study to measure the exposure of study participants to the randomized, spatially targeted intervention and will examine the effectiveness of Wolbachia introgression on outcomes such as surveillance ascertained arboviral disease and school attendance. The candidate will also participate in all aspects of the design and conduct of the research, work closely with field study personnel to implement the protocol and conduct analysis of the empirical data and build models of the impact of movement on acquisition of arboviral disease.

Preferred qualifications and skills:
• PhD in one of the following areas: epidemiology, mathematics, statistics, immunology, physics, computer science, population biology or a similarly quantitative discipline.
• Experience in study design.
• Strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology.
• Ability to collate and analyze data, interpret and present results to a high standard using a range of specialized research techniques.
• Good knowledge of R.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in communicating research findings to a non-specialist audience.
• Ability to work independently but also as part of a larger interdisciplinary research team.
• Fluency in Portuguese (or in its absence, Spanish) will be a useful skill but not required for implementing the project and training.

The position will be based at the University of Florida, FL, USA, with some time in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
