Job Description

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education (JRCoE) at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty positions. Specifically, we are hiring one assistant or associate professor of Higher Education and one assistant or associate professor of Higher Education with a focus on Intercollegiate Athletics Administration (IAA). We seek candidates who research higher education, student affairs, and/or college athletics through critical sociological, philosophical, historical, political, and/or cultural perspectives. We are particularly interested in hiring colleagues whose scholarship engages the transformational capacities of higher education and/or college athletics.

Key Responsibilities: Both positions involve teaching, service, and maintaining an active scholarly agenda. Additional curricular responsibilities include advising master’s and doctoral students, curriculum development, and program or departmental improvement. Service may include supporting initiatives at the program, department, college, and university levels; developing partnerships with community members, local organizations, non-profit entities, and other institutions of higher education; and supporting national scholarly associations. Scholarship is defined broadly by recognizing multiple designs, methodological traditions, and scholarly communities.

The Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies (ELPS) consists of three programs: Educational Studies (EDS), Adult and Higher Education (EDAH), and Educational Administration, Curriculum and Supervision (EACS).  The Intercollegiate Athletics Administration (IAA) concentration is nested within the EDAH program. Each of the three program areas offer the M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, the Ed.D. is offered by the EACS program.

The University of Oklahoma (OU) is a Carnegie-R1 comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, serving the educational, cultural, economic and health-care needs of the state, region, and nation from three campuses: Norman, Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, and the Schusterman Center in Tulsa. OU enrolls over 30,000 students and has more than 2,700 full-time faculty members offering nearly 500 different graduate and undergraduate degree programs.

Norman is a close-knit and vibrant community and is consistently a contender on “best place to live” rankings with outstanding schools, amenities, a low cost of living, small town charm, and a variety of recreational opportunities. Within an easy commute, Oklahoma City features a dynamic economy and outstanding cultural venues, adding to the region’s appeal.

Required Qualifications: Successful candidates must possess an earned doctorate or international equivalent in a relevant field or sub-field such as Higher Education, Sport Administration, Student Affairs, Educational Foundations, or Educational Policy, or other applicable disciplines and fields by August 2023. In addition, successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • A commitment to teaching, research, and service activities of a public, R1 university
  • A willingness and ability to teach, advise, and mentor graduate students
  • A demonstrated potential for sustained and impactful research and scholarship, as is appropriate for their career stage
  • A willingness and ability to work with graduate students, faculty colleagues, local communities, and/or higher educational professionals

Preferred Qualifications: Although both positions are open to all areas of research and methodological specialization, we are particularly interested in scholars whose inquiry focuses on critical understandings of higher education and/or athletics. Practitioner experience with community engagement will be considered a plus, as will engagement in relevant national associations or sub-committees. To meet these aims we seek candidates:

  • Willing and able to teach interdisciplinary courses and/or across departmental programs (Educational Studies, Adult & Higher Education, and Education Administration & Curriculum Supervision)
  • With a record of scholarly activity including publications and/or external research funding, appropriate to career stage
  • Whose scholarship engages critical knowledge traditions and theory
  • With professional experience in higher education or athletics, or related settings
  • Who have developed and maintained relationships within the higher education community at the local, state, national, and/or international level(s)
  • Who have experience supervising and supporting graduate students, and experience in the development and teaching of graduate-level courses

Application review will begin October 24, 2022 and continue until the positions are filled. The positions are 9-month positions and are expected to begin August 2023.

Applicants must submit a letter of application, a current CV, and names and contact information for three references.
