CSIRO’s Agriculture & Food Business Unit is seeking a motivated and efficient Laboratory and Greenhouse Technical Assistant to join their dynamic team in Black Mountain, in an ongoing role!

 

Reporting to the Research Support Manager, the Laboratory and Greenhouse Technical Assistant will be part of the Site Services Team. You will undertake a range of tasks, which will require you to apply your well-developed technical skills obtained through experience and/or technical training, to ensure the smooth and effective running of the business unit’s laboratory and greenhouse activities.

This role is expected to commence in January 2023.

Your duties will include:

  • Managing the movement of stock, equipment and consumables for the efficient operation of the laboratories, potting shed and quarantine facilities, including lifting up to 15kg on a regular basis.
  • Maintaining stocks of clean and sterile glassware in the laboratories by collecting used glassware from laboratories. Cleaning, sterilising and redistributing glassware to relevant laboratories on a daily basis.
  • Collecting empty consumable containers, such as plastic tip boxes, glass jars for tips and tubes, Pasteur pipettes from labs on regular basis, and refilling and sterilising.
  • Preparing and sterilising basic laboratory media and solutions.
  • Collecting and ensuring the safe treatment and disposal of laboratory waste following Physical containment Class 2 (PC2) and the Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) conditions, including keeping required records and conducting compliance checks.
  • Performing routine maintenance of wash-up room by keeping it clean, organised and well stocked, and maintaining equipment to a safe operational standard.

Salary: AU$50K – AU$65K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • An understanding of laboratory environments, and sterilisation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lift up to 15Kgs, bend, walk and perform repetitive movements.
  • Proven ability to undertake tasks as instructed and adhere to safety protocols to ensure one’s safety and those around you.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team and carry out tasks under the direction of Research Support Manager.
  • Ability to use initiative, apply sound judgement and manage competing priorities to achieve team goals.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this role, you must be an Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, or an Australian Permanent Resident. Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
