Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland (College Park) Department of Geographical Sciences is searching for a Senior Systems Architect/Administrator and Storage Engineer to support global environmental change research at the Global Land Analysis and Discovery laboratory in the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland. The GLAD lab monitors global land change using time-series satellite imagery, including tropical deforestation, crop monitoring, urbanization, among other themes. Results quantify the changing balance between economic land uses and natural systems on a changing planet. To do our work, the GLAD lab employs a data intensive HPC to process Pb scale raster inputs and is supported by various funding sources from NASA, USAID, the government of Norway, Bezos Earth Fund, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. We are seeking talented engineers to manage our processing system.

The Sr. Systems Architect/Administrator is responsible for full life cycle management of the department and GLAD HPC Linux environment including designing and setting up distributed computing, associate storage, security, patching and automation of configuration and deployment. The role is responsible for solving day to day IT problems utilizing tools such as Puppet, Redhat Satellite and Ansible. This person will provision new systems, OS patches, manage backups and configuration states and troubleshoot existing on-prem and cloud deployments, ensuring system security, maxim uptime and service stability.

This position is a 12-month, full-time status. We are able to provide sponsorship of an H1B visa. The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established from $120,000 to $160,000 per year, depending on qualifications. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and technical certifications or training or work experience

Experience:
Experience in the administration and management of Redhat Enterprise Linux 7 or greater including installation, configuration, optimization, backup and recovery.
Experience working with network switches
Experience in automation system configuration and management with Puppet and Ansible.
Experience with firewall setups, networking features such as teaming, bonding, natting, static routing.
Experience with setting and managing internal DNS and DHCP servers.
Experience with setting up Kerberos based authentication systems such as Redhat IDP or FreeIPA.
Experience with security based on PAM rules, filesystem ACLs.
Experience with setting up network file systems such NFS and Samba.
Experience with supporting GPU environments, fiber based IP and SAN networking and debugging issues at OSI layer 1 and 2.
Experience with IBM spectrum scale file system (formerly known as GPFS) including configuring, management, upgrading and debugging.
Experience with setting up distributed environments

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of Redhat operating systems internals, client/server computing techniques, distributed systems management concepts, server virtualization and all aspects of computer communications.
Good working knowledge of FC SAN storage environments including multipath setups.
Excellent problem solving, attention to detail, multitasking, communication and complex troubleshooting skills.
Ability to gather project requirements, develop detailed project plans, schedule and execute project tasks.
Preferences:
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline

Preferred Experience:
Experience managing large-scale environments
Experience with setting up L2 and L3 networking on switches.
Experience in programming in at least one high-level language such Perl, Python, or bash.
Experience with management and development tools such as Puppet, Satellite, Hiera, and Ansible.
Experience with compiling libraries and applications from source code and managing using environment modules.
Experience with software development
Experience with managing GIS library sets such as gdal, envi, etc.
Experience with parsing and analyzing logs in Splunk environment and setting up daily/monthly reports as appropriate
