Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Scientific and Instructional Support Technician position. The Scientific and Instructional Support Technician is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $61,545 - commensurate with experience. Supports the Geology Department, faculty, and students by providing expertise in the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of scientific and instructional equipment and instrumentation in the Beneski research laboratories. A particular focus is placed on the maintenance, method development, user training, and data quality and management in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) laboratory. Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Summary of Responsibilities
Scientific Equipment and Instrumentation
• Install, maintain, operate, and repair scientific equipment and instrumentation in the teaching and research laboratories, with a focus on the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Laboratory
• Analytical: SEM and associated detectors (CL, EDS, EBSD, WDS), several mass spectrometers in the department.
• Preparatory: Mineral separation, preparation of grain mounts, carbon coating and polishing of thin sections and grain mounts
• Maintain inventory, order consumables, liaise with service contractors
• Oversee chemical hygiene and safety in research and teaching laboratories
• Train and supervise a diverse group of students in the use of scientific equipment and instrumentation (SEM, optical microscopes and cameras, mass spectrometers)
• Train and supervise external users in the use of scientific equipment and instrumentation
Qualifications
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in Geology or related field, or in lieu of degree, 5 or more years of directly related experience
• Experience installing, maintaining, operating, and repairing scientific instrumentation
• Experience using a scanning electron microscope, and a basic understanding of EDS, WDS, CL, and EBSD analysis of rocks
• Basic knowledge of chemistry and crystallography of rock-forming minerals. Basic knowledge of rocks and rock-forming processes
• Experience in or commitment to effectively supporting a diverse student body and to contributing to an inclusive culture
• Skilled in the use of personal computers and software
• Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong time management, problem solving skills, ability to manage multiple priorities
• Attention to detail
Preferred:
• Master's degree (M.S.) or Doctorate degree (Ph.D) in Geology or related field (ABD at time of start date)
• 7+ years of experience
• Computer programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for the development of code to streamline data processing and reduction
