Summary

Information and Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Database Manager to join the Data Innovation, Systems, and Cloud (DISC) Services group within ITS. The DISC database administration team ensures the integrity, availability, security, and performance of databases for enterprise-wide systems and databases hosted for campus units. The team supports multiple database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB, Amazon Redshift, and PostgreSQL.

The Database Manager will lead the team and work with business stakeholders, related ITS technology teams, ITS leadership, and vendors to ensure that our database services meet our needs and that we are positioned to meet the future needs of the university.

If selected, you will report to the Director of Data Innovation, Systems, and Cloud (DISC) Services. In the context of ITS goals and strategy, you will:

Manage a team of professionals supporting our database services:
Promote a vision for evolving database services.
Collaborate with directors and peer managers to deliver the best possible customer experience.
Bear responsibility for staffing and budgeting decisions.
Accept accountability for the integrity, availability, security, and performance of our database systems.
You will be locally based in Ann Arbor, MI. There is an opportunity for hybrid remote/local or remote work.

Responsibilities*

Provide direction, leadership, and management of a team responsible for the operation and support of database infrastructure and software used across the campus.
Help to shape a data-centric culture of best practices for data warehouse solutions across campus.
Lead strategic database activities to improve and modernize business intelligence solutions for enterprise IT.
Inspire a culture of innovation and automation on the database team, balanced with reliable, stable, performant database solutions that support important university business and research projects.
Collaborate and consult with team members and outside vendors to ensure quality of current and new services are provided, open issues are addressed, procedures followed, and training developed.
Prepare and review budgets, approve expenditures, and submit proposals and give feedback on the staffing plan.
PRIORITY SETTING/STRATEGY/PLANNING

Define overall roadmap and strategic planning of the training direction for ITS programs and projects. Collaborate across the organizations within ITS and the University of Michigan (U-M) to plan, prioritize, and lead training efforts and develop strategies to meet future requirements.
Lead efforts to define and plan strategic directions for the organization, including those related to training, collaboration, and priorities for programs and teams.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, certification and experience.
Minimum of 8 years of IT professional experience working directly with database systems or applications.
Minimum of 3 years of management or supervisory experience leading a technical staff team.
Familiarity with data architecture in the context of a data-centric environment.
Proficiency in aspects of relational database usage, design, application development, or database system management.
Understanding of high-availability environments and disaster recovery.
General awareness of latest trends in the IT industry-related to database technologies including cloud computing.
Experience with budget planning and vendor relationship management including purchase negotiation.
Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
