Under the supervision of the Senior Executive Director of Development, National Food Industry (SEDOD), the Senior Director of Development (SDOD) will ensure the fundraising success of the philanthropic program by serving as a subject matter expert, a professional role model, and an identified team and program leader. The incumbent, having demonstrated leadership and success in the field, will execute strategies that support the shared vision of the Preparing Our People initiative. This effort includes preparing the Philanthropy team for the rigors of a campaign, to realize our goal of excelling as a highly collaborative, efficient, and creative team. The SDOD will help implement a cultural adherence to personal accountability, shared success, and a commitment to professional growth.

The SDOD will contribute by employing and modeling key processes and programs that support an office-wide focus on collaboration, efficiencies and metrics-based performance outcomes, in addition to primary role responsibilities.

Specifically, under the direction of the Senior Executive Director of Development Corporate and National Philanthropy, the incumbent will be a major gift frontline fundraiser securing corporate donations for the industry groups. The SDOD will assess and right-size the Food Industry Portfolio of campaigns. They will work with the existing volunteers to maintain appropriate and opportune fundraising campaigns, and secure new industry donations of $5K-$25K+ through identification, cultivation, board development, solicitation and stewardship. In support of these outcomes, responsibilities including securing meetings and building partnerships with donors throughout the entire National Food Industry and strategically engaging volunteers, as well as oversight and execution of fundraising events.

Key Responsibilities include:

Lead the National Food Industry campaigns and activities in reaching its strategic development and fundraising goal. Includes:

  • Meet annual activity and financial performance metrics.
  • Analyze and implement programs to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Partner with faculty on a variety of fundraising initiatives, and maintains and enhance collaborative relationships with City of Hope (COH) administrative offices and donors.
  • Assess and right-size the Food Industry Portfolio of campaigns for the Industry groups through frontline activity to build corporate relationships and make successful solicitations of $5K-$25K+

a. Grow a large national cause program with our retail and CPG partners (currently $2M; goal $8-10M)

  • Streamline the FIC events to only 5 Taste of Hopes and 2 galas (currently $1.5M; goal >$2M)

Managing the Food Industry volunteer efforts: Lead the team with a focus on accountability, best practices, and collaboration. The incumbent will demonstrate an ability to motivate volunteers toward strategic priorities Includes:

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • In collaboration with the Sr. Executive Director of Development, establish a National Food Industry Board with centralized fundraising activity that aligns with COH campaign efforts.
  • Merge four boards into one national board.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with donors, volunteers and COH faculty and staff.
  • Manage the volunteer committees.
  • Identify, cultivate and successfully secure donations from new industry donors through travel throughout the country with focused expansion to COH footprint.
  • Work closely with industry volunteers, staff, external vendors and corporate hosts in the direction of the industry efforts and execution of fundraising and cause marketing events.
  • Lead events efforts from budget to final execution, including initial event planning, vendor negotiations and contracts, mailings, tracking responses and online registration.
  • In collaboration with SEDOD and AVP of National Corporate Philanthropy, as well as key colleagues across OOP, work to design, develop and assign pipeline of individual donors. Maintain focused portfolio of 3-5 major gift prospects that may be managed in collaboration with National Philanthropy gift officers.

Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy. Includes:

  • Participate in meetings, task forces, and other special projects.
  • Act as spokesperson for City of Hope activities as requested.
  • Maintains a positive image when dealing with executive staff, donors, prospects, fundraisers and other City of Hope employees.
  • Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Philanthropy or related field;Experience may substitute for subject area requirements.
  • 5+ years in fund raising, development, or related field in non-profit or industry business environment. Experience in a complex medical or academic development setting encouraged. Demonstrated understanding of social media outlets such as Linked In, Twitter and Facebook required
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience required

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Advanced degree or subsequent experience.
