Job Description

The successful candidate will be involved in concept and laboratory work to develop, synthesize, characterize, and electrochemically evaluate next generation cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The Applied Materials Division, Process R&D and Scale up Group is seeking a recently graduated (2022-2023) candidate for a postdoctoral appointment to conduct general research in material science and electrochemistry related to next generation cathode material synthesis for lithium-ion batteries. The selected individual will work under supervision and will assist the Lead PI on developing experimental methods and techniques to synthesize these new materials. The candidate needs to be familiar with electrochemical testing and evaluating of these materials.

Position Requirements

  • A doctorate degree in material science or related chemistry science with 0 to 1 year of post-graduate experience.

  • Knowledge in the areas of materials science, metallurgical and ceramic engineering including hands-on, practical laboratory experience with material synthesis and processing, and analytical methods.

  • Hands-on experience: XRD & Refinement, XAS, XPS, SEM-EDX, TGA-MS, DSC, BET, ex/in-situ synchrotron spectroscopy, coin-cell preparation and testing.

  • Knowledgeable in electrochemical analysis techniques such as GC, CV, GITT and EIS.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and on a timely basis with the supervisory personnel on all developments or matters resulting from work activities.

  • Knowledgeable to provide novel solutions to electrochemical issues from multiple areas of materials research including TM-oxides, TM-phosphates, composite materials, electrolyte stability, and electrochemical interfaces.

  • Skilled in oral and writing communications at levels of the organization.

  • Record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas are highly desirable: DoE, continuous/batch co-precipitation reactions (e.g., CSTR), molten-salt synthesis, solid state synthesis, thermal stability of cell components, ability to work with larger equipment or experience in kilo-scale synthesis, electrochemistry, and Li- and Na-ion battery chemistry.
