The Physical Therapy Residency is a 1-year program for an individual who is responsible for assisting the director and manager in the operational aspects of a department or unit. The Physical Therapy Resident provides quality patient care and family training through evaluation, treatment planning, and the application and assignment of physical therapy modalities and procedures in accordance with the regulations governing the practice of Physical Therapy and in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the City of Hope National Medical Center. This individual actively assists in performance improvement initiatives, either through direct involvement or membership in PI team efforts. It is expected that the individual who holds this position is able to actively participate with peers, subordinates, and supervisors in constructive problem solving, as well as to facilitate frequent team building interactions with staff.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Establishes goals and treatment plans based on evaluation data, rehabilitation potential, discharge plans, and in coordination with goals and plans of patient, family and other care team members.
  • Demonstrates skill and creativity in implementing patient treatment programs which are safe, effective, and efficient while maintaining therapeutic relationships with patient and caregivers.
  • Interacts effectively both inter and intra departmentally on a regular basis for planning and coordination including assigning treatments to physical therapy aides and physical therapist assistants.
  • Participates in weekly mentor sessions including the completion of mentor session preparation materials and following assignments.
  • Actively and appropriately participates in meetings, educational in-services, tumor boards, and physician clinics as required. Leads monthly case reports/journal clubs for the department.
  • Completes over 300 hours of didactic learning through the residency curriculum to ensure the highest level of self-competence and adherence to professional practice standards.
  • Completes a quality improvement project or clinical research to be submitted for publication in a peer reviewed journal or for presentation at a profession conference.
  • Complete case report for submission in application to sit for the Oncologic Certified Specialty Examination.
  • Participate in formative and summative assessments with residency mentors and faculty.

Your qualifications should include:

Minimum Education:

  • Residents must have a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the start of the residency program.

Minimum Experience:

  • Entry level position, no experience required. Prefer acute care internship experience.

Req. Certification/Licensure:

  • Current Physical Therapist License or Physical Therapist License Applicant in the State of California.
  • BLS Certification through the American Heart Association

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $34.64 - $53.70 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
