Job Description

Veterinary Technician II – Comparative Medicine Core 

Embark on a fulfilling career as a veterinary technician in the newly developed Comparative Medicine Core at Moffitt Cancer Center. The Comparative Medicine Core oversees and supports Moffitt's animal research and technical support. We are hiring two Veterinary Technicians III to be part of developing this new program to provide professional veterinary care to the research animals, focusing on the highest animal care and welfare standards. 


Position Highlights:  

  • This position provides a four-day workweek with ten-hour workdays, making it a great option for individuals seeking work-life balance. 
  • The new Speros campus will have a 30,000 sq. ft. Comparative Medicine state-of-the-art Facility, which will complement MCC’s existing, fully accredited 28,000 sq. ft. facility. 

The Ideal Candidate: 

  • Experience working with research facility, specifically mice. 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, emergency/referral practice or veterinary teaching hospital, as well as multimodal anesthesia experience. 
  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring and anesthesia protocol skills. 


  • Surgical experience, including survival surgical experience and maintaining a survival surgery suite.  
  • Experience in standard operating procedures, design and implementation.
  • Experience with rodent breeding colony production techniques and maintenance.   


  • Responsible for maintenance of rodent colonies, including that of breeding colonies, and assists with the rodent health surveillance program.
  • Perform routine health surveillance, diagnostic testing, sample collection, and processing for rodents held in quarantine.
  • Assists with animal medical procedures, including physical exams, observation of animals for disease and discomfort, administration of medications and treatments, collection of diagnostic samples (e.g., blood, fecal samples, etc.) in consultation with Attending or clinical veterinarian.
  • Prepares animals for surgery, including calculating and administering doses of drugs, anesthetizing, intubating, preparing and draping, and monitoring vital signs.

Credentials and Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's degree (from an AVMA program), two (2) years of veterinary technician experience inclusive of one (1) year working in a research facility. 
    • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree (AVMA program) and four (4) years of veterinary technician experience inclusive of one (1) year working in a research facility may be considered. 
  • Current license, registration, or certification as a veterinary technician. Will be required to provide documentation upon hire that shows passing of Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).  
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level is preferred.
