Job Description

The Office of Community Outreach, Engagement, and Equity (COEE) works to uphold Moffitt’s commitment to maximize the impact of its research through engagement and equity in the cancer center’s catchment area and beyond. COEE works to place health equity at the forefront of our research and ensure that our work is informed by ongoing and bidirectional exchange of information and ideas between our researchers and community stakeholders.

 

The Community Health Educator (CHE) will work within the Community Outreach arm of COEE to plan, implement and evaluate outreach and educational activities and initiatives.  Developed programming will provide the community with health education in the areas of cancer prevention, early detection, screening as well as clinical trials and applicable research studies. The Community Outreach team strives to empower community members to take an active role in their health and wellness.

 

Position Highlights:

  • The Community Health Educator (CHE) will implement and evaluate educational programs servicing community members, partner agencies, professional community audiences and other health providers. The CHE will focus efforts in the defined target areas and specifically selected community sites by utilizing effective strategies, that emphasizes (1) prevention and health promotion and (2) research.
  • The CHE will coordinate the provision of cancer awareness and preventive health education services in the community and act as a resource person in a capacity building role.
  • The CHE will develop and disseminate educational materials and other media and communication messages in a variety of venues, e.g., group and individual teaching modules, displays, virtual, radio or television messages, etc.
  • The CHE will assist the leadership team in seeking opportunities for external funding and sponsorship of community outreach endeavors.

 

The Ideal Candidate has:

  • At least 1 year of experience delivering health education and community outreach in diverse communities.
  • At least 1 year of experience developing and evaluating health education programs for diverse populations.
  • At least 1 year experience with developing new community partnerships and fostering relationships with providers.
  • The ability to communicate and develop educational materials in multiple languages. Bilingual English/Spanish language abilities in oral and written form preferred.
  • The ability to demonstrate good judgment in selecting strategies for addressing community needs and resolving barriers to care.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Works as a liaison among researchers, partners and community to address needs and disseminate culturally tailored cancer information.
  • Fosters relationships with new partners and maintains existing partnerships in the community.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative and relevant cancer education programs for community audiences that are diverse in scope as assigned
  • Ensures effective and efficient coordination of the delivery of patient/family education programs, activities, and materials/media.
  • Establishes processes for ongoing monitoring of community/patient/family education activities and strives for ongoing improvement, including data collection and reporting activities.
  • Supports education and research initiatives.

 

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required with at least 1 year of teaching/education, community outreach experience, preferably in cancer education.
    • Degree field of study required: Health Education, Public Health, Nursing, Anthropology, or other Social Science.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) is preferred but not required.
  • At least 1 year of experience in public speaking, public relations, marketing, program planning, program development, evaluation and working with diverse groups required.
  • Applicant must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills necessary for resolving challenges that are diverse in scope.
  • Applicant must have reliable transportation and an active Florida driver's license in good standing in order to drive to locations as needed/assigned.
