What Your Job Will Be Like:
The W87-0 Stockpile Systems Engineering team is seeking an experienced R&D Systems engineer with a mechanical engineering background to join our multidisciplinary team; providing leadership in planning, prioritizing, and conducting a portfolio of work critical to maintain a safe and reliable deterrent for our nation’s defense. The W87-0 engineering team supports day-to-day operations; performs test activities demonstrating compatibility with system interfaces; manages development and production of hardware and components; trouble-shooting, and problem-solving with internal and external stakeholders across the Nuclear Security Enterprise. This role will include an opportunity to take a lead in developing, prioritizing, and executing an annual assessment strategy that supports the understanding of the W87-0 performance and safety. Stockpile systems engineering includes frequent collaboration externally, including with staff and leadership from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Department of Defense, and various NNSA production agencies.
A successful candidate will have experience that supports quickly developing a fundamental understanding of an actively fielded system and use that expertise to lead multi-disciplinary teams to plan and execute qualification, maintenance, assessment, and sustainment projects providing high value to the mission. This role will present opportunities to demonstrate leadership that can support ongoing career development and personal advancement at Sandia.
On any given day you will be called on to:
- Investigate/troubleshoot anomalies in cross-functional teams
- Team with experts to plan, execute and analyze data from advanced experiments and modeling and simulation Analyze mechanical assemblies
- Analyze system and subsystem architectures
- Provide technical consultation on critical design elements
- Integrate and test subassemblies
- Maintain and update production documentation
- Plan and execute testing for environmental, function, and safety qualification
- Derive, reconcile, and track requirements with upstream and downstream interfaces
- Present at technical design reviews and other forums
- Represent Sandia on internal and external multi-organizational project teams

Salary Range:
$130,100 - $258,900
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Master’s degree in an engineering or science discipline plus 1-year relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in related discipline plus 5 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- effective delegation and oversight of technical and programmatic studies (e.g. modelling and simulation, trade studies, cost planning, technical basis, etc)
- developing and documentation of requirements and concepts of operation
- oversight of component development or sustainment projects teams
- leading a product design and production qualification team
- performing project management
- generating and publishing technical documentation (e.g. specifications, general engineering, product definition, etc)
- developing and testing prototype systems
- analyzing test data
- qualifying systems
- identifying failure modes and performing failure analysis
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 25%
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Master’s degree in a mechanical engineering or science discipline plus 5-year relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in related discipline plus 9-years of relevant experience
- Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to integrate into and work effectively across multiple technical teams and with management
- Knowledge and understanding of Nuclear Weapon Systems
- Familiarity with Sandia/Nuclear Weapon Complex drawing and authorization system, product development and qualification, testing and evaluation, modeling, and simulation
- Experience working with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), DOD customers, DOD contractors, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Pantex
- Familiarity working with mechanical design tools, such as CREO
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver presentations to customers and various levels of management
- An active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance
About Our Team:
W87-0 Systems is comprised of the W87-0 System Engineering and W87-0 Sentinel System Integration teams. The W87-0 System Engineering Department (8287) at SNL/CA is responsible for the Stockpile Support and Stockpile Maintenance activities associated with the W87 nuclear warheads. This Systems Engineering organization performs the planning, development, integration, and coordination with the DoD customer (USAF) for the DOE, supporting the primary national defense mission of the laboratory. The W87-0 Sentinel System Integration Department (8288) at SNL/CA is responsible for certification of the W87-0 warhead for first flight on the Air Force’s Sentinel missile. Activities include development and assembly of flight test units to collect environmental data from test flights and developing a Joint Test Assembly (JTA) to certify the weapon system for operational use. Our diverse team of engineers and technical professionals provide expertise in multiple subject areas, including systems, electrical, mechanical, software and qualification engineering. This work is performed with an array of mission partners across a spectrum of security boundaries.
