Department 5322 focuses on Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) and Electronic Technologies for a variety of sponsors. This includes the development and fielding of high-performance PNT systems to support various Nuclear Weapon (NW), National Security Programs (NSP), Homeland Security, and interagency programs and R&D initiatives. The department specializes on enhancing PNT technologies through contested or denied environments, including navigation integrity and situational awareness, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) calibration and specialization, advanced sensor fusion, and Alternative Navigation (Alt-Nav) sensors. These include, but are not limited to, terrain correlating Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR), Multi-GNSS, and Signals-of-Opportunity (SoOp) navigation for national security applications. The department also participates in architecting, implementing, and deploying embedded electronic systems.
Department 5322 has varied work opportunities and is actively seeking R&D Electrical/Computer/Embedded engineers with experience in one or more of the following fields (successful applicants will be mentored by experienced engineers to further expertise in):
- Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Engineering
- Designing, implementing, and testing fieldable real-time software/hardware using C in embedded systems
- Software Development in C++, Matlab, and Python, including object-oriented programming, version control (Gitlab), and test-driven development
- Perform software and algorithm development for both real-time systems and modeling & simulation efforts in PNT.
- Advanced State Estimation for both integrity and accuracy – statistical anomaly detection and traditional sensor fusion (e.g., Kalman Filtering)
- Working with inertial sensors and their use in inertial navigation systems (accelerometers, gyros, control electronics, etc.)
- Designing, implementing, and testing inertial systems for Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT).
Salary Range:
$95,400 - $185,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Robotics or a relevant STEM discipline.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a required US DOE Q – level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:

- Experience with one or more of the following is desired:
- Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) expertise including areas such as: Estimation/Kalman filtering
- Real-time embedded systems development
- Software development (C, C++/Java/Python)
- Modeling & Simulation using MATLAB/Simulink
- Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs)
- Working with multi-disciplinary teams
- Excellent teaming and communication skills
- Active DOE Q or DoD TS security clearance.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
