What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a manager to lead the Z Facility Execution Department. This department resides in the Z Experimental Capability Management Group within the Pulsed Power Sciences Center and supports a diverse breadth of experimental research, development, and applications in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program.

This department is responsible for several key functions: collaborate with Topical Area Leads to create and manage the annual Z Integrated Shot Schedule, coordinate ongoing shot readiness activities, and prepares shot execution timelines to guide the activities for each shot. Additionally, the department has a team of technical writers/editors from Dept. 3244 who provide essential support for Center documentation. A key aspect of this work focuses on addressing the evolving challenges of running the facility, understanding, and implementing changes to operational practices. Your position will include being an integral member of the Group 1670 leadership team and the broader Center-management team, collectively supporting the overall management and operation of Z and advancing its capabilities and usage into the future.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of the personnel in the organization by fostering a diverse work environment and ensuring a culture that promotes safety and security.
  • Recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, and work assignments of personnel in the organization.
  • Leading the organization with sustainable impact through a common vision, staff development, and strong teaming with collaborators.
  • Provide leadership to the Work Planning and Controls practices at Z.
  • Management of activity level work in the Z Facility.
  • Manager on Call. The Manager on Call acts as the primary manager of Z operations associated with tasks and facility needs that can impact shot execution during typical Z daytime operational hours (i.e., 6 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$149,700 - $254,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM discipline plus 12 years’ experience; or Bachelor’s and graduate degree in a relevant STEM discipline plus eight years’ experience
  • Experience with coordinating or managing activity-level work in a large-scale laboratory setting with high hazard operations
  • Leadership experience as demonstrated by serving as a project manager, principal investigator, or prior management experience
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships and partnerships among peers, staff, management, and partners
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational strategies
  • Detailed knowledge of Sandia safety and security policies and demonstrated ability to efficiently execute work while following required procedures
  • Experience in Work Planning and Controls of Facility Operations
  • Experience in Work Planning and Controls of Pulsed Power Operations

About Our Team:

The Z Facility Execution & Health department is responsible for several key functions. They collaborate with Topical Area Leads to create the annual baseline Z Integrated Shot Schedule, coordinate ongoing readiness determination and scheduling of shots through the Shot Schedule Working Group (SSWG), and provide regular updates to the community regarding shot plans and status. The department also prepares shot execution timelines (Gantts) to guide the activities for each shot. Shot Directors oversee and guide the execution activities, while the Planning & Integration Team (PIT) tracks and reports post-shot lessons learned, shot tempo, delays, and planned vs. executed information. Additionally, the department has a team of technical writers/editors from Dept. 3244 who provide essential support for Center documentation.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
