Job Description

 ROLE SUMMARY 

This role involves working in close collaboration with cross-functional Asset Teams and senior leaders within Pfizer R&D (PRD) to identify strategic issues, support discussions on complex strategic tradeoffs, and implement qualitative and/or quantitative analyses to inform decision-making.  
 
The Senior Manager of PDA is a key nexus for Commercial, R&D, Medical, Access, Regulatory, and partner lines, within the context of the Medicine Team. They are responsible for partnering with the cross-functional Asset Teams to drive strategic alignment for the early-stage and late-stage investment opportunities in the Category pipeline, in the context of Category and Enterprise strategies.  PDA owns the objective qualitative and quantitative business case development for a range of early / late-stage assets, life-cycle opportunities and technology platforms, highlighting the opportunities and risks to Category and Executive leadership.  In addition, the role will also be responsible for advising key Category portfolio and strategic initiatives.   The PRD Organization encompasses Anti-infectives, Vaccines, Inflammation & Immunology, and/or Internal Medicine programs in the R&D pipeline. The Senior Manager may work with a PDA Director as part of a PDA team or independently, depending on the level of experience.   


ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES  

 

Decision Analysis  

  • Provides decision context by contributing to objective business case development by cross-functional Asset Teams.     

  • Leads or may supports, strategic alignment workshops with Asset Teams to identify key development options and strategic implications. 

  • Develops comprehensive valuation analyses to understand and communicate the sensitivities and drivers of value; may own analysis, depending on team and experience.

  •  Begins to leverage relationships across the company to gather assumptions, validate information, and socialize decisions, potentially working with a PDA Director to gain alignment with teams. 

 

Portfolio Analysis and Reporting 

  • Generates decision context (e.g., portfolio budget implications and potential trade-offs) for Asset Teams and Category Leadership.  

  • Contributes to the development of Category Strategy. 

  • Assists in pull-through of Category Strategy to go-forward R&D investments. 

  • Supports asset and portfolio-level reporting for operating plan, long range forecast, and portfolio prioritization exercises. 

 

Governance 

  • Guides Asset Teams and Category leadership on investment governance processes and templates. 

  • Advises Category and Executive Governance on the risks and opportunities of a potential R&D investments.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS  

  • BA/BS degree in life science, finance, or business. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum 7 years of experience, lesser with advanced degree. 2-5 years' experience in management consulting, investment banking, equity research, strategic planning, portfolio management, or decision analysis preferred.

  • Experience and expertise managing cross-functional teams required.

  • Expertise in healthcare and biopharmaceuticals required. 

  • Excellent Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills. 

  • Analytical Thinker: Synthesizes facts and information from varied data sources, both new and pre-existing, into discernable insights and perspectives; takes a problem-solving approach by connecting analytical thinking with an understanding of key value driver in clinical development. 

  • Strong Data and Information Manager: Understands and uses analytical skills/tools to produce data in a clean, organized way to drive objective insights.   

  • Exceptional Communicator: Understands, translates, and distills the complex, technical findings of the team into commentary that facilitates effective decision making by senior leaders; can readily align interpersonal style with the individual needs of stakeholders. 

  • Relationship Manager: Acts as a thought partner and brings forward recommendations/questions that influence stakeholders; builds robust and long-term strategic relationships with individuals from all levels of the organization, understanding individual goals and objectives to ensure future alignment of the entire portfolio. 

  • Influencer: Clearly articulates expectations, capabilities, and action plans; actively listens with others’ frame of reference in mind; appropriately shares information with team; favorably influences senior leaders and asset teams without direct authority. 

  • Highly Collaborative: Manages projects with and through others; a team player; shares responsibility and credit; develops self and others through teamwork; comfortable providing guidance and sharing expertise with others to help them develop their skills and perform at their best; helps others take appropriate risks; communicates frequently with team members earning respect and trust of the team.   

  • Strong Project Manager: Clearly articulates scope and deliverables of projects; breaks complex initiatives into detailed component parts and sequences actions appropriately; develops action plans and monitors progress independently; designs success criteria and uses them to track outcomes; drives implementation of recommendations when appropriate, engages with stakeholders throughout to ensure buy-in. 

  • Proactive Self-Starter: Takes an active role in one’s own professional development; stays abreast of industry trends, and actively contributes to the Decision Analysis community of practice.  

  • Financially / Analytically Proficient: Possesses strong understanding and expertise of expected cash flow modeling, economic value measures (e.g., NPV, IRR), and other types of analytical modeling (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation, decision tree analysis, multi-attribute analysis). 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience and expertise in Anti-infectives, Vaccines, Immunology, Cardiovascular/Metabolic, or Migraine disease areas. 

  • Advanced degree in business, decision analysis, medicine / science, or related quantitative field.  

  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

Work Location Assignment: On Premise  

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $117,300.00 to $195,500.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 17.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
