What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you interested in an opportunity to lead a compelling R&D department with significant mission impact? We are seeking a manager to direct a team developing and deploying electronic materials, packaging techniques, and soldering and brazing technologies for high consequence applications. Our team of subject matter experts provides expertise in packaging and prototyping of electronic assemblies as well as in the optimization of soldering and brazing joining processes. We maintain a portfolio of R&D projects to push the state-of-the art in these areas. Our customers span the Sandia mission portfolio and Nuclear Security Enterprise. As 1835 manager, you will be responsible for nurturing these relationships while teaming with other 1800 managers to support Nuclear Deterrence components and systems groups during design and production phases. A key element of your assignment will be advancing the department’s capabilities in support of Sandia’s mission areas.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Set department direction and encourage innovation to advance innovative capabilities in support of our mission
  • Manage the department’s talent pipeline and career development including recruitment, staffing, training, performance assessments, work assignments, recognition of successes, and any necessary disciplinary actions
  • Implement safety and security responsibilities for the department
  • Cultivate a work environment that aligns with Sandia’s core values, including safety, security, and diversity & inclusion
  • Steward laboratory spaces and equipment to ensure critical capabilities are maintained and grown
  • Partner with Nuclear Deterrence and Strategic Partnership Program organizations to meet mission deliverables
  • Serve as a derivative classifier (DC)

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$149,700 - $254,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in metallurgy, materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or related scientific or technical field
  • Eight or more years of proven experience in science and/or engineering
  • Three (3) or more years of leadership experience successfully leading technical teams
  • Active DOE Q-level or DoD Top-Secret security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • PhD in materials science, metallurgy, engineering, physics, chemistry, or related scientific or technical field
  • At least two (2) years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • Experience in electronics packaging, soldering and/or brazing technology for the fabrication of products used in high consequence applications
  • Experience in product development and realization, especially in introducing new science and technology to Sandia mission areas
  • Experience leading activities within Sandia’s Nuclear Deterrence and/or Strategic Partnership Programs
  • Interest and ability to lead people and organizations

About Our Team:

The Microsystems Assembly & Brazing Department specializes in: (1) advanced packaging of electrical, MEMS-based, and optical components, (2) addressing near-term and long-term soldering R&D needs, and (3) developing brazing methodologies for mission applications.

The packaging team develops prototypes, fixtures, and proof-of concept devices to meet a wide variety of national security mission needs. We have advanced packaging and assembly capabilities that include precision wire bonding of integrated circuits, laser machining, and hermetic sealing, which are used to prototype complex integrated electronics assemblies. The soldering and brazing teams focus on understanding the process-to-performance connection of these joining methodologies. We lead research to anticipate future needs while addressing engineering challenges affecting the mission today.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
