What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 052442, MESA III-V Hetero-Integration’s Equipment Team is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Operations Engineer that ensures the seamless operation of critical semi-conductor fabrication (fab) equipment and machinery across all equipment areas in Sandia National Laboratories MESA’s MicroFab facility. Direct experience in developing, building, modifying, repairing, and maintaining microelectronic semi-conductor tools, instruments, systems, and processes are required. The selected candidate will be working in a cleanroom setting monitoring equipment and working proactively to maintain and upgrade the facility’s capability.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve as a general technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for fab and subfab equipment reliability efforts.
  • Use Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) principles to optimize PM sequencing on various fab manufacturing equipment.
  • Collect and examine available reliability data for fab tools within MESA’s Manufacturing Execution System (XSite) and equipment maintenance logbooks to make data-driven decisions to optimize maintenance activities.
  • Compile fab equipment performance data for analysis using well-defined engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
  • Derive methods to collect fab equipment performance parameters (temperature, pressure, flow, vibration, etc) and uses the data to enhance maintenance effectiveness.
  • Provide support in setting up, modifying, preventive maintenance schedules in XSite.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support adjustments to fab maintenance tasks and schedules.
  • Initiate elemental engineering studies into equipment/process failures and presents analysis details to more experienced engineers for approval/feedback on next steps.
  • Assist tool owners, maintenance personnel, and management in root cause failure analyses.
  • Use data to recommend optimal fab tool replacement sequence with MESA’s Extended Life Program (MELP) team.
  • Participate in tool commissioning and acceptance processes to ensure proper tool installation per equipment design parameters.
  • When business needs require, perform activity-level work (ALW) on high-precision fab equipment.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$81,900 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Associate’s degree in electronics technology, electronics engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology or relevant field plus nine (9) years of directly related exempt level experience (or 18 years non-exempt level experience) or;
  • Bachelor’s degree in the above fields plus five (5) years directly related exempt level experience (or 10 years non-exempt level experience).
  • Experience performing activity-level work on high-precision fab equipment (eg. performing fab equipment maintenance in a cleanroom setting)
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in:
  • structured maintenance improvement programs and/or methodologies
  • performing hands-on fab equipment installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • using data analysis techniques in: Statistical Process Control (SPC), Reliability Modeling and Prediction, Fault and Weibull Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • using, hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and data collection devices
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies
  • Green or Black Belt Certification
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated project leadership

About Our Team:

Sandia National Laboratories Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications (MESA) complex provides unique processing capability in semiconductor microfabrication. The MESAFab Operations departments develop and maintain core semiconductor processing capabilities and capacity that enable our customers to build differentiating Microsystems products. Two unique facilities are co-located within the 65,000 square foot MESAFab complex including:

• 12,000 square foot Class 1 Silicon Fab for 6-inch silicon wafer processing• 15,000 square foot Class 10 and Class 100 MicroFab for compound semiconductor material processing and silicon wafer post-processing

Key microfabrication processing areas include photolithography, reactive ion etch, wet etch/clean, oxidation and diffusion, thin films, CMP (planarization), ion implantation, metrology, deep reactive silicon ion etch, wafer bonding and thinning, electroplating, packaging, MEMS release, yield learning and statistical process control.

The MicroFab has expertise in compound semiconductor material processing. All MicroFab equipment (180 tools) is maintained and supported by our in-house maintenance and technical staff. We operate 18 hours per day, 5 days per week (2 shifts). We can produce highly customized, low-volume production or prototyping devices and have flexible processing capabilities.
