Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory seeks a highly experienced and innovative scientist/engineer to coordinate and grow our research efforts in carbon management, including carbon capture, storage, transport, and/or conversion. This newly created position will be responsible for developing a comprehensive research strategy in carbon management that spans the entire Laboratory, and for contributing to a world-class research program in carbon management. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in nurturing new capabilities that build on our unique strengths, enhancing our research portfolio in this critical domain, and actively engaging with external sponsors to secure funding and foster collaborative partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a strategic research plan in carbon management aligned with the mission and strategy of Argonne National Laboratory.

  • Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and researchers to oversee and execute research projects effectively and efficiently.

  • Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in carbon management and propose innovative research directions to address them.

  • Foster collaboration and knowledge exchange across different divisions within Argonne National Laboratory to leverage expertise and resources.

  • Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions, to secure funding and establish collaborative research initiatives.

  • Contribute to a world-class research program in carbon management, and potentially train postdoctoral researchers and students (as appropriate), publish research findings in high-impact journals, present at conferences, and participate in public outreach activities to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness about carbon management issues.

Position Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field such as chemical engineering, environmental science, materials science, or a related discipline.

  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in leading or conducting research and/or technology development in carbon management or related fields.

  • Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary research teams and delivering impactful outcomes.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, build strong collaborations within a multidisciplinary research organization, cultivate strong relationships with government agencies and external partners on behalf of Argonne National Laboratory, and secure external funding for research.

  • Strategic thinking, with the ability to identify scientific and technological trends and research opportunities and challenges, articulate a strategic vision that capitalizes on Argonne National Laboratory’s capabilities, and develop and implement a strategic plan that pursues that vision.

  • Deep understanding of carbon management technologies, including carbon capture, storage, transport, and conversion, as well as carbon emissions reduction strategies.

  • Familiarity with the U.S. Department of Energy, its R&D programs, and its national laboratories is desirable.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive.

The selected individual will be placed at the appropriate level (RD4 or RD5) depending on the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • RD4: Bachelor’s and 12+ years, Master’s and 7+ years, or Doctorate and 6+ years.

  • RD5: Bachelor’s and 15+ years, Master’s and 12+ years, or Doctorate and 10+ years.

The selected individual will be placed in the appropriate job profile “Chemical Engineering”, “Chemistry", “Computational Science”, “Engineering Systems Modeling “, “Environmental Science and Engineering”, “Systems and Design Engineering” or relevant job profile based on the background and qualifications brought to the position.

Depending on the candidate’s qualifications and interests, the position may include a joint appointment with a partner university.
