College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia Department of Physiology's focus is the framework of the body's cells, organs and systems, how they work, and how abnormal function leads to disease. The department is dedicated to outstanding research and excellence in education. Our federally funded scientists study some of the nation's top killers like cardiovascular disease and hypertension, and train independent, creative, productive scholars and PhD graduates, who publish in top tier journals and who are competitive for positions wherever they choose to go. The department offers programs leading to the PhD degree. By virtue of their interdisciplinary training, the department's graduates compete successfully for positions in medical schools, universities, government, and industry.
Job Summary
This position provides administrative and technical oversight for a research laboratory in the Department of Physiology. Responsibilities include ensuring research protocols are followed and met; safety guidelines are followed in accordance with institution and government regulations; management of laboratory resources; providing teaching and technical oversight to students, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians; processing of data, present findings and assist Principle Investigator (PI) with current and future studies and research applications. Studies use a blend of whole animal approaches to measure blood pressure (BP), renal and vascular function with ex vivo and biochemical, immunological and molecular biology analyses to explore the mechanisms regulating kidney function in health and disease. Experiments include functional measures of blood pressure and renal function, protein, and mRNA expression assessments, as well as hormone, cell signaling and genetic analyses, among others.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs complex experiments and data analysis related to producing research results and preparing findings for future development in conjunction with lab personnel.
Provides daily oversight and supervision of students, post-docs and technicians in lab to ensure research experiments are followed according to protocol. Assists in development of new lab techniques and troubleshooting problems.
Maintains supply inventory to ensure chemicals, lab supplies and equipment are available and stored properly in accordance with regulations. Maintains and creates protocols for EH&S office; oversees lab inspections; maintains a chemical inventory database.
Coordinates administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintains records related to use. Maintains and creates protocols for LAS; oversees lab inspections.
Uses independent judgement in the daily operation of the lab to ensure safe and efficient use of resources. Monitors use of resources to ensure compliance with Federal guidelines and institutional protocols to include troubleshooting and maintenance of laboratory equipment, assessment of needed repairs and/or replacements.
Tracks and monitors budgetary resources to ensure effective lab operations to include assessing and scrutinizing supply/animal/equipment purchase requests, reconciliation of invoices and budget reconciliation.
Develops and manages the quality assurance plan for specific research initiatives to ensure the integrity of the research is maintained.
Aids in preparation of professional papers on research results in collaboration with the PI and laboratory personnel; assists PI with data preparation for grant applications and renewals.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited college or university with a minimum of one year directly applicable experience; previous supervisory experience.
OR
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of five years' progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience; or major coursework completed on a Ph.D. in a related scientific field with two years of progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of eight years' progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in biology, chemistry and/or biochemistry; extensive experience in a research laboratory setting to include designing and conducting complex experiments and data analysis; prior research experience in exploring the molecular mechanisms that regulate blood pressure (BP) and renal health and function a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently as well as interact with lab members. Ability to complete work and meet deadlines. Highly motivated and committed to achieving excellence in the form of productivity and publications. Ability and willingness to work with rodent animal models.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Salary Minimum: $62,300 annually
Pay Band: B12
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
