Job Description

Summary

The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. This position is responsible for providing husbandry support to a diverse group of research animals in multiple buildings, according to established policies and procedures.Position requires alternating weekend and/or holiday work.

Job Duties

  • Provides daily animal husbandry that includesobserving, handling, restraint, feeding/watering and providing general care, and changing cages/racks.
  • Identifies health concerns and reports them through an electronic medical record system.
  • Provides routine care and handling of USDA-covered species.
  • Performs generalized cleaning that includes sanitizing rooms, equipment, hallways and other areas.
  • Maintains daily records for animals and signs multiple logs.
  • Performs sexing and weaning of rodents.
  • Receives animals into and transfers animals out of facility, and maintains detailed health records.
  • Ensures that activities are in compliance with AAALAC standards.
  • Demonstrate BCM Core Values, Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork and Excellence.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Detailed record keeping and log documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Desire to care for multiple animal species in various BCM vivaria.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
