Job Description

POSITION: Nine-month, tenure track faculty position in Ballet at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2024


 


The University of Oklahoma’s Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts, School of Dance is seeking an Assistant Professor of Ballet to start August 16, 2024. Housed in the Reynolds Performing Arts Center and annually ranked as one of the top institutions in ballet and modern dance, the school offers a BFA in ballet performance, modern dance performance, ballet pedagogy and an MFA degree in dance. Our school, consisting of over 80 dance majors, emphasizes performing, with multiple mainstage performance opportunities each year and highly refined training that prepares our graduates to meet the expectations of a professional career in dance and sustain multifaceted careers with both nationally and internationally recognized companies and organizations. A strong ballet foundation was built by our founders Yvonne Chouteau and Miguel Terekhov. The development and growth of the ballet area continues to expand through our current nationally and internationally acclaimed faculty, ensuring small class sizes with one-on-one feedback for each student. The University of Oklahoma is home to the Five Moons Dance Festival, which celebrates the legacies of the five Native ballerinas from Oklahoma who rose to global fame for their transformative impact on the ballet world. The School of Dance is honored to be a part of the legacy built by one of the five moons, Yvonne Chouteau. 


 


Special consideration will be given to candidates that have established a significant career as a performer, teacher, director, and/or choreographer/repetiteur, and whose ranking in the profession is demonstrated by a substantial career in the national/international dance world.


 


Responsibilites:


·      Teach all levels of Ballet Technique to undergraduate majors and non-majors, Dance Composition, Pointe Technique, Improvisation Technique, and lecture courses on topics such as Dance Appreciation, in addition to subjects unique to the selected candidate’s expertise.


·      Teach Graduate level courses such as Introduction to Graduate Studies and Advanced Teaching Methods.


·      Mentor and academically advise undergraduate and MFA majors.


·      Advise student choreographers and coordinate performances.


·      Participate in faculty governance of the school, college, and university.


·      Contribute to the undergraduate and graduate curriculum development.


·      Fulfill administrative duties typical to a tenure track position.


·      Maintain an active research/creative activity practice.


·      Choreograph and/or stage work for School of Dance majors annually.

Required:


·      MFA degree and/or exceptional professional experience in the field, to include but not limited to, employment with established companies that offer a minimum of 35-week annual contracts.


·      Experience in teaching undergraduates and ability to teach graduate level courses.


·      Ability to teach all levels of an established ballet technique such as but not limited to Vaganova, RAD, Cecchetti, or ABT National Training Curriculum.


·      Ability to choreograph and/or stage works from diverse national and international repertory. International connections with leading choreographers in the field preferred.


·      Minimum of two years teaching experience and/or professional performance background of at least seven years with an established ballet company.
