Job Description

Summary

The Torre laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic research technician to help unravel pathways contributing to chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer\'s disease. The lab performs experiments on fruit fly and mouse model systems, as well as human brain tissue. The ultimate goal of the lab is to develop therapies to improve cognition in chemotherapy patients and patients at risk of developing dementia. The technician be highly organized, has excellent communication skills, and is passionate about science. As a member of a new lab, the research technician will benefit from direct mentorship and training by Dr. Torre.

Job Duties

  • Helps maintain and monitor fruit fly and mouse colonies.
  • Performs behavioral testing, immuno-histochemical studies, and molecular assays (e.g. western blot, RT-qPCR).
  • Develops techniques and prepare SOPs required for specific research projects.
  • Assists in day-to-day operations of a scientific research laboratory (e.g. ordering supplies).
  • Collects and analyzes data.
  • Prepares graphs and figures for publications.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information to help plan future studies.
  • Participates in lab meetings.
  • Tasks and responsibilities of this position include assisting with daily operations of a research lab and collecting and analyzing data.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor\'s degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fruit flies and/or mouse model systems is highly desired.
  • Be organized, has excellent communication skills, and is passionate about science.
