Job Description

In this position, the Postbaccalaureate Appointee will join our Computational Science Division (CPS) to work consisting of theory, modeling, and code development in computational cosmology. It will also require the use of AI and machine learning techniques. The codes developed will run on Argonne’s Aurora exascale computer system. The results of this work support large DOE-sponsored sky surveys such as the Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).

The work involves modifying the evolution equations and initial conditions; it will also involve the use of AI methods for improving the scientific capability of the code and its analysis tools. The candidate will also be working with partial differential equations, particle methods, quantum evolution equations, large-scale parallel computing involving GPUs, and the use of generative AI techniques, especially foundation models for scientific applications.

Job Tasks:

  • Develop and test a parallel nonlinear Poisson solver and write a report on its properties and performance.
  • Port a 3D Schrodinger solver written in Julia to the HACC framework and write a report on its convergence properties and performance.
  • Work on integrating AI methods in HACC to improve the dynamic range of the code. Write a report describing the results obtained.

Position Requirements

  • Recently completed Bachelors degree in computer science and/or physics
  • Programming experience with one or more programming languages, such as C++, CUDA, and MPI for parallel programming.
  • Effective collaboration skills and ability to work in a team environment
