Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION:This is an intermediate-level Biological Scientist position in a research lab testing viral vector-based gene therapies for the treatment of inherited disease. The Biological Scientist is expected to be able to 1. follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for molecular analysis-including DNA and RNA isolation and real-time PCR; 2. Complete the execution of assigned experiments; 3. Assist in maintaining a necessary rodent colony to achieve research objectives; 4. Assist in performing rodent procedures as necessary to complete research objectives (including assisting in injections and blood and tissue collections) 5. Present researching findings to PI at laboratory meetings.
The Biological Scientist I must be able to perform the following essential functions:
Molecular Techniques and Analysis: Primer design, RNA and DNA isolation, performing real-time PCR and reverse transcriptase real-time PCR, immunoassays to gene therapy vectors and transgenes, including ELISAs and neutralizing antibody assays. This may include expansion/maintenance of cell lines and analysis of transfection/infection. Performing protein analysis by isolating protein of interest from cell or tissue lysates and performing/analyzing western blots. These assays require strict adherence to written SOPs.
Animal Studies: Will participate in treating animals with pharmacological agents or AAV vectors either through a variety of injection routes. Other duties with the animals may include doing echocardiography, sensory and motor function, force mechanics, metabolic studies, and flow cytometry. Blood and tissue samples will be collected and processed from the animals in a clean and sterile manner for downstream analysis. Individual will play a key role in regulatory management (IACUCs) and record keeping for each study using a secure web database.
Regulatory Compliance: Individual will ensure that laboratory is compliant with governing rules and regulations. Maintaining and updating laboratory SOPs.
Perform tasks and experiments as directed by the Principal Investigator.
EXPECTED SALARY:
$48,000 - $50,000 annually
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in gene therapy research (Specifically AAV).
Animal colony management and handling of rodents experience.
Experience maintaining cell lines and performing in vitro analyses.
Experience performing DNA/RNA/protein extraction, real time PCR, digital PCR, ELISA, and flow cytometry.
Must be meticulous in recording, tracking & reporting of data collected.
Strong interest in translational research.
