Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant II

Ophthalmic Assistants provide vision care under the supervision of a licensed ophthalmologist and assist with taking patient histories, performing diagnostic tests and procedures, patient scheduling, and exam room preparation.

A caregiver in this position works 7:30am – 4:30pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties and perform basic/advanced patient care as directed by a physician or supervisor.

  • Receive and prepare patients for examination and treatment under the direction of a supervisor, physician and/or technician.

  • Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties for high acuity patient populations, patients who have been admitted to the hospital and/or critical care patients.

  • Perform routine screening tests and document patient information in the patient medical record.

  • Stock and maintain exam rooms with equipment and supplies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • One year of experience in an ophthalmic setting providing direct patient care. Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all the required experience.

  • Knowledge of ophthalmic sub-specialties and testing procedures.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
  • May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
  • Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.
