Job Summary
The College of Science and Mathematics, Physics and Biophysics department at Augusta University (AU) is actively seeking a candidate to provide support to all teaching laboratories housed in the Department of Physics and Biophysics. Primary duties include preparing and maintaining equipment, overseeing inventories and maintenance, ordering supplies: to include interacting with appropriate vendors to order laboratory supplies and equipment, preparing materials and supplies used for experiments in the physics teaching labs. Emphasis is on introductory physics labs including set-up and put away of lab materials. Any other labs offered within the department may be included in responsibilities for both maintaining, troubleshooting, and purchasing. This position will also be responsible for purchasing research and teaching equipment needs within the department. Inventory of equipment is also required. To the extent needed, this position will coordinate proper removal or disposal of supplies and/or waste, ensuring that waste is disposed of according to proper procedures. In addition, oversight (scheduling and assignment) of student assistants in the introductory labs. Involvement with use, maintenance, training for work in our Physics Innovation lab (maker space) is anticipated.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Work with faculty and student laboratory assistants to ensure that the proper supplies and equipment are in place and ready for all student labs each day. Assist faculty in the training of student laboratory assistants on procedures relevant to equipment preparation, waste disposal, and other matters related to lab setup and lab safety. Maintain the stockroom in an organized manner. Maintain an adequate inventory in the stockroom of routinely used supplies and expendables. Provide routine service for laboratory devices and other equipment. Create and oversee work orders related to repairs of departmental equipment and infrastructure. Maintain inventory asset controls for designated departmental property and equipment. This may include light use of tools, maintenance of 3D printers, and other simple fabrication facilities. Work with faculty to ensure that proper guidelines for the storage, labeling, and handling of supplies and waste are adhered to.
The job duties include, but are not limited to:
LABORATORY EQUIMENT AND SUPPLIES:
Determine needs, obtain quotes, and purchase laboratory equipment and supplies (including all necessary interactions with vendors, purchasing office, and receiving).
INVENTORIES:
Maintain inventories and laboratory organization of laboratory rooms of laboratory courses associated with neuroscience major.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND REPAIR:
Coordinate or perform troubleshooting and repair of laboratory items.
SAFE LABORATORY CONDITIONS:
Perform functions related to safe laboratory conditions and operations.
PURCHASING RECORDS:
Maintain purchasing records.
LABORATORY MATERIALS:
Prepare materials for upcoming student laboratory session [e.g. oscilloscopes, wires, electronics, Arduino boards, soldering equipment, computers]
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform other duties as needed for efficient laboratory operations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in physics, astronomy, engineering or other physical sciences, or materials science directly related to the research area, with one year of applicable experience in a lab setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with modern physics or physical sciences laboratory and techniques is required. Purchasing experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Must be knowledgeable about modern laboratory and research techniques
Knowledge of standard accounting principles.
Proficiency in Peoplesoft, Excel, and Word.
SKILLS
Good organizational skills and time management.
Independent and focused work habits
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Must have a high level of organizational skills and be detail oriented.
ABILITIES
Ability to prioritize tasks and self-identify needs within scope of work duties.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, to be highly motivated, and to work well with faculty and students.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday-Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Pay Grade: B6
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
