What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Lean Excellence and Design (LEAD) Department is currently seeking an experienced Lean Process Engineer with proficiency in Operational Excellence to join the team. This is your chance to make a meaningful impact by designing and implementing innovative solutions that enhance productivity, efficiency, and value across critical organizational platforms. The selected candidate will work with an agile team of diverse backgrounds to make Sandia an easier place to work. This team is called upon regularly to improve processes across the Labs, teach and certify Lean Green Belts and Black Belts, and continuously improve our own toolkit available for anyone at the Labs to use. The successful candidate may also collaborate with groups across the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) to identify improvements in how we operate for the greater mission to the Department of Energy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leverage their knowledge of operational excellence and continuous improvement to identify and prioritize systemic issues across organizations, gaining leadership buy-in for Labs-level continuous improvement opportunities.
- Teach and coach leaders across various organizations in structured problem-solving from problem identification, to developing prototypes and experiments, and in implementing sustainable solutions that consider the end-to-end system.
- Develop problem-solving approaches, tools, and templates to address unique technical and operational challenges in partnership with project and program managers, technical experts, and senior leaders.
This position is eligible for telecommuting; however, the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location in Albuquerque, NM when necessary.
Salary Range:
$95,400 - $185,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering, etc.), Business, or a relevant field, plus (5) years of related experience; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
- The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
- Demonstrated knowledge and advanced experience in Lean and/or Six Sigma approaches.
Qualifications We Desire:
- A master’s degree in a STEM field (Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering, etc.) or Business.
- Proficiency in data analytics, statistical analysis, and critical judgment to make informed decisions.
- Proven expertise in systems thinking, considering various elements including people, processes, products, tools, behaviors, and culture to enhance core operations and solutions applied to both technical and business platforms.
- Experience with institutional-wide Operational Excellence implementation and approaches, including practical application of improvements to an organization’s management operating system.
- Proven ability to coach leaders and influence others to drive systemic improvement.
- Experience in diverse industries, including non-manufacturing environments like finance, academia, or R&D.
- Ability to quantify cost savings and calculate return on investment for improvement efforts.
- Demonstrated success in driving measurable results through operational excellence and lean thinking.
- Strong writing, communication, facilitation, and organizational skills for both technical and non-technical communities.
