Position Description:

We are seeking a Bioinformatician to join the laboratory of Ting Wu at Harvard Medical School as part of a project to study genome organization, function, and evolution, including sequence conservation. A successful candidate will independently conduct computational studies within this context. Essential qualities for this position include extensive experience in handling complex data analysis, a collaborative spirit, high levels of self-motivation, creativity, and open-mindedness. The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprising geneticists, engineers, biochemists, and microscopy experts. We expect the individual fulfilling Bioinformaticist II position to be initiating new projects and establishing lines of investigation.

 

Specific Responsibilities: The candidate will address key questions in genetics, focusing on the role of sequence conservation in maintaining genome integrity.

This will entail:

1. Independently design and execute computational projects, using innovative methods. 

• Write and execute scripts for various computational and statistical analyses (e.g., Python/R, Command Line, Shell, MATLAB, Genomic tools such as Bedtools, SAMtools, and Bowtie, PyTorch, and supervised/unsupervised machine learning, etc). 
• Research and obtain access to publicly available structural variant and SNV databases to support studies (e.g., gnomAD, 1000 Genomes, UK Biobank, T2T Consortium, The Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA), Simons 

2. Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI), etc) in support of the research goals of the lab.

3. Independently manage sub-projects and mentor junior bioinformaticians to help develop their programming expertise. The candidate is expected to spend 10% of their time on this responsibility.

4. Stay updated on relevant literature and emerging computational tools

5. Lead group meetings to share computational pipelines with the lab and to ensure best practices and write up the research findings for manuscripts and grant funding.

6. Collaborate with and train colleagues within and outside the laboratory in computational methods.

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• The ideal candidate should have a minimum of three years of post-baccalaureate computational research or industry experience in genetics, epigenetics, genomics, biostatistics, and/or machine learning.
• Applicants should have extensive training and experience in computational biology, data science, statistics, or related fields, with hands-on expertise in programming, machine learning, and artificial intelligence for building, testing, and evaluating predictive and classification models. 
• Proficiency in Python, R, and MATLAB, along with experience in cloud or cluster computing, is required. 
• Strong verbal and written communication skills are also required.

Additional Information

Please note this is a part-time, 17.5 hours (.5 FTE) per week position.
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
