Researching Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes... With the increasing frequency of obesity and diabetes, especially in Georgia, cardiovascular disease is reaching epidemic proportions. The Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University knows the demand is high for new and better treatments. Job Summary
Support ongoing experimental research in the area of physiological studies using mice models by conducting a variety of experiments, including measuring body composition via NMR spectroscopy, assessing blood pressure using tail cuff technology, evaluating arterial stiffness with a flow Doppler meter, and measuring blood flow using functional ultrasound.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP AND EXECUTION: Perform in vivo experiments on mice, including measurements of:
Body composition via NMR spectroscopy. Blood pressure via tail cuff method. Arterial stiffness using a flow Doppler meter. Blood flow assessment with functional ultrasound.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Ensure accurate data collection during experimental procedures, maintaining detailed records of all results and observations. Perform data analysis, utilizing software such as MATLAB for processing and interpreting experimental data.
ANIMAL CARE AND HANDLING: Follow established protocols for the care and handling of laboratory mice, ensuring their well-being and adherence to ethical guidelines.
COLLABORATIVE SUPPORT: Work closely with the research team, contributing to the development of experimental protocols and preparation of experiments and equipment. Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and manuscripts based on experimental results.
LABORATORY MAINTENANCE: Maintain the laboratory environment, including the upkeep of equipment, inventory management, and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed.
OTHER: Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory research.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong biology background and hands-on experience with animal handling and physiological measurements.
Experience with imaging software (e.g., MATLAB, ImageJ, or similar platforms).
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be highly motivated. Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Attention to detail, strong work ethic and desire to learn. Ability to use sound judgement and work independently.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Salary Range: $45,400 - $55,000 annually
Pay Band: B8
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
