What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking an experienced computed tomography (CT) subject matter expert to lead technical operations that support science and engineering challenges through expertise in nondestructive evaluation of energetic components. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in applying this technology to non-routine activities. This individual will lead the design, development, validation, and implementation of testing methodologies for material or component qualifications and evaluations, failure analyses, and the expansion of capabilities. Responsibilities include, establishing safety and security protocols, partnering with customers, maintaining equipment and instruments, managing costs and schedules, creating formal reports, and managing safe and secure day-to-day operations.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Lead and mentor lab analysts in nondestructive evaluation by reviewing data, providing technical feedback, and sharing knowledge.
  • Oversee the reconstruction of 2D images into three-dimensional data sets.
  • Collaborate with vendors to troubleshoot and maintain CT instrumentation.
  • Interact with stakeholders regarding evaluation needs, data interpretation, and presentation of findings.
  • Work in a dynamic team environment and manage time according to work demands.
  • Develop new experimental processes and optimize existing evaluation techniques to enhance research capabilities, improve evaluation methods, and increase efficiency.
  • Serve as a nondestructive evaluation resource to product realization teams, especially during investigations.
  • Collaborate with industry subject matter experts in CT evaluation to expand capabilities.
  • Serve as a member of specific and strategic Product Realization Teams that would benefit from engrained Nondestructive evaluation expertise

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Active DOE Q or equivalent clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:¿

  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:¿

  • Three or more years of experience with 2D image reconstruction resulting in three-dimensional data.
  • Experience in documenting safety and security procedures for CT analysis.
  • Experience in developing and documenting CT scan parameters for non-routine test articles.
  • Three or more years of experience in Computed Tomography (CT) operation and data reconstructions specific to explosive materials and components.
  • Proven experience in planning, conducting, and documenting high-quality, rigorous scientific nondestructive evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with service engineers on troubleshooting and repair of instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in the use of Zeiss and North Star Imaging (NSI) CT instruments.
  • Proficiency in reconstructing data using Volume Graphics software.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in technical reports.
  • Qualified Explosive Operator.
  • Qualified to handle ESD-sensitive components and test articles.

About Our Team:

The Explosive Materials Operations Department (7455-1) is responsible for laboratory operations in the areas of energetic material processing and formulation, environmental conditioning, nondestructive component testing, component disassembly, and material characterization. We partner with stakeholders to understand their material or testing needs, provide technical recommendations, and deliver quality materials, data, and interpretations of results, thus enabling data-driven decision-making.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
