What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated E&O Engineering Program & Project Lead to join the W88 Stockpile Systems team (2224) in planning and executing D5LE2 Compatibility Assessment, W88 Tech Basis, and Performance Evaluation Test Unit activities.

The SLBM warhead systems teams (W76-1, W88 Alt 370, and W93) at Sandia collaborate with the NNSA, US Navy, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and DoD contractors to assess the compatibility of these warheads with the next generation of the Trident II missile, D5LE2. This highly integrated effort is in the early stages of development for flight test bodies, ground test equipment, and test planning/coordination, as well as modeling and simulation capabilities to support missile development and flight testing.

W88 Stockpile Systems Tech Basis and Performance Evaluation Test Unit activities encompass a portfolio of high-visibility, fast-paced engineering and science projects that assess the safety, reliability, and performance of the W88 stockpile system. Major projects include developing and executing studies to enhance the technical basis for the Annual Assessment, coordinating with stakeholders to implement test strategies, and other activities that support system sustainment. You will work closely with external customers, stakeholders, partners, and users, including NNSA, the Navy, production agencies, and domain experts throughout the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

This role will be organizationally assigned to the W88 Stockpile Systems team (2224) and will allocate approximately 50% of your efforts to supporting the W76-1, W88 Alt 370, and W93 D5LE2 needs, and 50% to the W88 Alt 370 Stockpile System. Working on this program, you'll be part of an outstanding team dedicated to national security, making impactful decisions on three high-visibility nuclear weapons programs. You'll work in state-of-the-art facilities with talented individuals across the Nuclear Security Enterprise and DoD, tackling interesting challenges at every stage of design and development, and building lasting relationships throughout your career.

In this role, you will lead the programmatic planning and execution of a wide range of technical projects, including defining test objectives and deliverables; developing budgets and schedules; tracking and monitoring project execution from initiation to closeout; and incorporating systems engineering, configuration management, risk management, and quality standards into the project lifecycle.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead the D5LE2 Compatibility Assessment Team to define project scope, schedules, cost estimates, and deliverables that support mission objectives; negotiate deliverables with external customers and partners; and organize resources to implement project scope.
  • Engage the W88 Technical Basis Realization Team (TBRT) in support of stockpile system sustainment activities within the W88 technical basis portfolio.
  • Collaborate with the W88 Performance Evaluation Test Unit to drive project activities and ensure alignment with technical objectives.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration with program customers, stakeholders, and partners to define and track risks, develop mitigation strategies, and report on progress toward risk reduction.
  • Develop and oversee Work Package Agreements with supporting organizations to ensure project alignment and accountability.
  • Apply advanced technical program/project management techniques and tools in developing project/test plans, negotiating work packages, developing project schedules, and ensuring successful completion of project deliverables.
  • Partner with the Navy Stockpile Hardware Lifecycle Team to plan and execute test activities at both indoor and outdoor facilities at SNL and at partner sites, including the DoD.
  • Oversee the programmatic aspects of manufacturing TM hardware at KCNSC, ensuring alignment with technical specifications and quality standards throughout the production process.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel is required for this position (up to 25%).

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience.
  • Knowledge of technical program/project management practices, including developing project plans; managing scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; documenting baseline reports and change control; and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve project objectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to effectively plan, organize, and lead technical teams and projects to successful completion.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience working with NNSA and Navy program sponsors.
  • Familiarity with nuclear weapon designs and processes.
  • Experience in leading projects related to nuclear weapon systems or similar complex engineering projects, with a focus on safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Experience and knowledge in systems engineering principles.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

About Our Team:

The W88 Stockpile Systems team is responsible for supporting the US Navy W88/MK5 SLBM-based nuclear weapon system, to help assure it remains safe, reliable, and of the highest performance as the underlying basis of the US nuclear deterrent capability. We provide engineering support for the life cycle of the weapon including maintenance, logistics, refurbishment, surveillance, special studies, testing, analysis, and assessment. Our team is also leading the cross-system aspects of the D5LE2 compatibility assessment program for the W76-1, W88 Alt 370, and W93 systems.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
