Job Description
Job SummaryThis position will work alongside the Senior Lab Manager for the School of Biomedical Engineering in providing full undergraduate and common research laboratory support for the School of Biomedical Engineering, functioning as a liaison between the department and school to employ the full technical skills available in the college to all departments.
The Department’s essential functions center on ensuring laboratory safety, compliance, and operational support within the school’s research and teaching facilities. Responsibilities include evaluating and advising on health, safety, and regulatory compliance; investigating and reporting lab safety incidents; and collaborating with the Senior Lab Manager to maintain hygiene plans, policies, and procedures. The role supports chemical and supply inventory management, fume hood programs, hazardous waste disposal, and preventative maintenance of academic equipment. Additional duties involve coordinating equipment scheduling, training students on safe chemical handling, maintaining lab supplies, managing safety training systems, and assisting with purchasing, reconciliation, and reporting. The position also involves providing general support to faculty, staff, and students, as well as completing assignments from departmental leadership.
Essential Functions
Works with the Senior Lab Manager to provide written recommendations to improve processes, experimental design, procedures, and equipment to minimize the potential hazard.
Conduct evaluations of fume hoods.
Assist Senior Lab Manager in developing and presenting various safety training programs for the school’s faculty, staff, and students.
Assist the Senior Lab Manager in conducting follow-up and reporting of lab safety events (incidents and near misses) to identify root causes and corrective actions.
Organizes or administers training and laboratory orientation, ensuring all safety and procedural protocols are followed.
Assist in establishing lab procedures, creating and managing lab-related documentation and maintaining a database for these documents.
Ensure that all faculty, staff and students comply with all laboratory rules and regulations, including health and safety policies guaranteeing the highest quality of results and providing training to ensure compliance.
Be responsible for having well-maintained laboratories. This includes maintaining and organizing an inventory of parts and equipment needed for the undergraduate laboratories and coursework related to the laboratories, overseeing the timely maintenance of the laboratories and equipment which includes inspection, cleaning, calibration, testing and repair of lab equipment, including contacting vendors to provide maintenance services for both assigned departments.
Responsible for the custodial services to keep the laboratories always clean.
Initiate and supervise work orders for laboratory facility repairs and modifications for both assigned departments
Assist staff, students or others by providing lab equipment instructions or procedural guidance. Must anticipate potential problems and help staff to resolve them as they occur to keep programs on schedule for both assigned departments.
Work with Senior Lab Manager to arrange for experts from various fields whose knowledge can help with the completion of work tasks or laboratory improvements.
Meet regularly with the other college Lab Managers as scheduled by the Director of Lab Managers to address broader college technical needs and to solicit support for larger department projects
Maintain and update to a central database a space inventory of the department they are serving.
Take and pass a safety test once a year as scheduled by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety.
Assist researchers in purchases, and implementation of laboratory needs including infrastructure changes to support that research.
Conduct laboratory tours to visiting parents and potential students.
Be cross trained to serve in other college laboratories as assigned by the Director of Lab Managers and maintain an up-to-date SOP manual for other Lab Managers to use.
Pursing ongoing professional development or continued education.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of a Associate's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, or Chemical Engineering.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Vast knowledge of requirements of Occupational Health and Safety Administration regulations and guidelines.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, provide timely and prompt turnaround for projects and tasks, use excellent judgment when problem-solving solving and bring innovative solutions.
Good oral and written communication skills
High degree of professionalism, initiative, integrity, adaptability, urgency to task, and motivation.
