Postbaccalaureate Research Scholar Donczew Lab

Department: Cell Cycle & Cancer Biology
Location: Oklahoma City, OK
Position Overview and Responsibilities
This research opportunity in the Donczew Lab is an opportunity for up to two years meant for postbaccalaureate students who wish to attain research experience that will help prepare them for graduate or professional school in a STEM-related area or healthcare.
Scholars will receive professional development opportunities through:
  • One-on-one mentorship from a supervising faculty member via informal daily interactions and formal weekly meetings
  • Access to graduate student workshops and seminars that address skill building and career development
  • Additional meetings with senior graduate students and postdoctoral research scientists to get real-world perspectives about graduate school, the skills/effort needed to succeed, and further scientific training.
  • Involvement in research projects exploring the mechanisms of transcription and DNA replication in eukaryotic cells.
  • Potential to present research at local and national scientific meetings and to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Preparing media and reagents and assisting lab manager in other daily tasks.
  • Conducting experiments under the guidance of senior scientists using modern molecular biology, biochemical and genomic methods.
  • Contributing to projects based on yeast and/or mammalian cell lines models to explore fundamental mechanisms of transcription and DNA replication in eukaryotic cells and the interplay between the two processes.
  • Staying up-to-date with relevant literature and gaining significant hands-on experience in experimental design, cutting edge lab techniques and data analysis.
    Minimum Requirements
  • Recent (within the last 3 years) BA/BS degree in a STEM field, such as the biological sciences, engineering, chemistry, physics, or computer science, and a desire to gain research experience in preparation for applications to graduate or professional schools in STEM related areas OR recent (within the last 6 months) master's degree in a STEM field, such as the biological sciences, engineering, chemistry, physics, or computer science, and a desire to gain research experience in preparation for applications to graduate or professional schools in STEM related areas.
  • Professionalism, strong work ethics, excellent communication skills, and acceptance of diverse personalities/cultures
  • High attention to details and ability to multitask
  • Must be organized, willing to learn and take direction once trained, keep meticulous records, and meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm to address important biological questions
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Recent (within the last year) BA/BS/MS degree in a STEM field, including biological sciences, engineering, or chemistry, and a desire to gain research experience in preparation for applications to graduate or professional schools in STEM related areas.
  • Prior experience in wet lab and/or computational skills including Python, R, HPC cluster etc.
    Work Hours
    Typically, Monday through Friday, 8:30AM to 5:00PM. Ability to come to lab over weekends or holidays as experiments require is expected.
