As a Laboratory Assistant, you will perform a variety of laboratory procedures and clerical functions across one or more laboratory areas. In this role, you will support Histologists by receiving overnight specimens and verifying accompanying documentation.

A caregiver in this role works a day/evening rotation from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Perform various laboratory procedures.

• Assistwith receiving,identifying, accessioning, processing, transporting, and storing specimens.

• Operate laboratory equipment and performs routine instrument maintenance, trouble shooting and minor repairs.

• Perform clerical duties including answering phones, dataentryand filing.

• Perform Quality Assurance activities.

• Maintain adequate stock of supplies;performsinventory management of transporting and distributing supplies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• High School Diploma or GED

• Completion of three months of on-the-job training to learn department laboratory procedures, instrumentation and Cleveland Clinic policies

• Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision

• Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Histology or microbiology lab assistant background

• Previous experience in a lab

• Histology experience

Physical Requirements:

• Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens and utilizing instrumentation.

• Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.

• Requires frequent sitting or standing.

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
