Job Description

Summary

The Senior Research Assistant performs advanced laboratory and research activities in support of large-scale genomic sequencing projects and research initiatives at the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC). This position independently executes complex laboratory procedures, maintains high-quality standards, assists with process optimization, and supports the production of high-quality genomic data for research and clinical sequencing programs. The Senior Research Assistant serves as an experienced laboratory resource, provides technical guidance to junior staff, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives within a high-throughput sequencing environment.

Job Duties

  • Perform complex molecular biology laboratory procedures including nucleic acid extraction, quantification, quality assessment, library preparation, normalization, and sequencing workflow activities.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation used in high-throughput genomic sequencing.
  • Ensure accuracy, integrity, and traceability of biological samples throughout laboratory workflows.
  • Review laboratory data for quality assurance and identify potential issues requiring corrective action.
  • Assist in developing, validating, and implementing new laboratory methods, protocols, and process improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and throughput.
  • Maintain detailed laboratory records using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and other electronic documentation systems.
  • Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to Research Assistants and new laboratory personnel.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory, coordinate reagent preparation, and ensure adequate supplies to support uninterrupted production.
  • Participate in quality assurance, proficiency testing, and continuous quality improvement activities.
    Assist with implementation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure compliance with institutional safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements, including CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, OSHA, and other quality standards as applicable.
  • Collaborate with laboratory scientists, bioinformatics personnel, project managers, and operations staff to support project timelines and production goals.
  • Participate in special projects, technology evaluations, and laboratory optimization initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Four years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Experience working in a molecular biology, genomics, biotechnology, clinical laboratory, or high-throughput sequencing environment preferred.
